Wedding Wednesday

What does a love song sound like ? Well, the other day I was listening to the radio and a "bug" doctor was reporting on the upcoming end of dormancy for cicadas. Every seventeen years, cicadas come out of their homes, only when the soil reaches 64 degrees, and make themselves known. Cicadas are tree insects measuring approximately one inch in length.Cicadas are probably best known for their buzzing and clicking noises, which can be amplified by multitudes of insects into an overpowering hum. Males produce this species-specific noise with vibrating membranes on their abdomens. The sounds vary widely and some species are more musical than others. Though cicada noises may sound alike to humans, the insects use different calls to express alarm or attract mates  Why talk about cicadas on Wedding Wednesdays ? While I was listening to the radio interview with the "bug" doctor, callers were lamenting their woes about cicadas. . .The cicada population is said to be 600,000 per person, so riding a motorcycle without a helmet or goggles could prove to be challenging. If you have a swimming pool, once they shed their shells you more than likely will find more than your friends enjoying a refreshing afternoon dip. If you live in the center of Connecticut you will find  the population of cicadas will the most densely populated. After answering all of the callers questions, the "bug" doctor said "Don't be annoyed by the call of the male and female cicadas ... sit back and enjoy their love song." Like the lyrics of a beautiful love song ... that touched my heart

Wedding Wednesday

Well, the big day is finally here. You have planned, crossed things off of your list, and plannedd some more. Your wedding professionals understand your vision and will create the day you have always dreamed of.
So, what could go wrong you ask ? Be prepared a few misadventures during the day. It is always a great  pre-cautionary idea to assign someone, even a friend or family member, to do a quick walk-thru right before the ceremony. Give that person a check list or even a few sketches so that they are familiar with the lay of the land and have them check everything from table linens to tent sides .... votive candles to outdoor heaters. Have them be sure the tent is clean and dry ... the table linens pressed ... that there are extra votives just in case of a dud ... and have them test the heaters to be sure they are working. Also, make sure that your go to person has all of the vendors and wedding professionals day of contact telephone numbers ... just in case.
And one more thing .... breathe :)

Transfixed in contemplation, the elf woman slowly tilted the cradle and the sleeping prince rolled effortlessly into her arms. With heartfelt thanks she laid the gentle changeling in his place, that she too may grow to bring light to the world. Lifting her skirts, she wrapped the human seed within it's folds and took him swiftly away.

Wedding Wednesday

When planning your wedding
A. Choose wedding professionals that will go above and beyond to make your day perfect !
B. Expect the unexpected to happen !

My son got married last Saturday. As you can imagine it was a very emotional day for me. Being the floral designer and the mother of the groom was sometimes challenging but I did get thru it with only a modicum of tears.
The ceremony took place on the beach in Madison, CT with cocktail hour to take place on the patio of the Surf Club and the reception inside.
Imagine if you will a windy, cool day in April. The happy couple envisioned tall grasses in large clear glass vases full of sand as the decoration for the ceremony. They wanted it to feel as natural as possible. My daughter in law mentioned this to a family friend last year before hurricane Sandy came for a visit here in Connecticut. The morning of the storm, the family cut down all of the grasses in their yard at their beach front home and saved them for the wedding. I got two three foot tall swirled glass vases to sit on either side of the bride, groom and the minister. There were also four, two foot tall clear glass vases designating the aisle.
One of my employees and I headed out to the ceremony toting the vases, the very, very tall grasses and a bucket to scoop up sand. Carefully filling each vase to the brim with the grasses, we then used the buckets to gather sand to put into the vases to keep them standing upright. I am going to say that again ... to keep them standing upright. That part didn't happen :(   The wind was pretty strong that day and it kept catching the grasses and as we watched they tipped over almost in slow motion. Plan B. Dig a hole in the sand with the  bucket and bury the bottom of the vases in the sand. Plan C. One of the workers had 5 pound weights in his car and suggested dumping out the sand, placing the weights in the bottom of the vases and then replacing the sand and grasses. Sounds like a good plan right ? Problem ... the weights were larger than the opening of the vase. Plan D. I found duck tape in the trunk of my car, taped the weights to the bottom of the vases, dug holes in the sand, buried the bottom of the vases, and then filled the vases to the brim with sand and the grasses. Houston, we have a lift off !

Poetry, Prose & Lyrics

How do we make this world a better place ?
How do you keep evil thoughts and deeds at bay ?
How are you to be sure that you and your loved ones are safe ?
How can you explain to the little ones that love does conquer all ?
How do we help the ones in need ?
How do we forgive the travesties that others commit ?
Can we foster another side of ourselves, each and every one of us, that will make our world peaceful and free ?

Anquish

Every breath, step and thought
Brought me back to you
I physically felt a tug on my heart
Lost my thoughts
And couldn't find my words
When you left
Where did that anquish go ?
